Pictured, Keltie Sabin’s Grade 3/4 Little Falls Public School class presents a cheque for $377.30, raised through a recent raffle draw, to St. Marys Refugee Sponsorship Group member Margaret Smart-Wheaton (back row, left). As part of a recent lesson on ‘persuasion,’ the class decided to start a raffle draw for prize baskets filled with items ranging from baked goods to toys, games and movie tickets. The draw was promoted over the morning announcements and with “persuasive” posters (pictured) that the class hung around the school. Smart-Wheaton said the Refugee Sponsorship Group has scheduled an open house event at the Pyramid Centre on April 5 where the public will have a chance to meet, welcome and learn about the new family of Syrian-Canadians living in St. Marys. The event, including desserts and coffee, will begin at 7:00 pm, she said. She also noted that the group has begun working on the paperwork to bring a second family of four refugees to St. Marys.
